How should couples split bills when they have different incomes?

The two most common approaches are equal splits and proportional splits. A proportional split ties each partner's contribution to their share of combined household income — if one partner earns $4,000 a month and the other earns $6,000, they contribute 40 and 60 percent of shared bills respectively. This prevents resentment when there is a meaningful income gap and keeps neither partner feeling financially squeezed. Some couples also maintain small personal spending allowances outside the shared pool so each person retains some financial independence. Document the agreed split in your couple monthly budget template so there is no ambiguity month to month.
