How should I budget for irregular family expenses like school fees or car repairs

The most reliable method is a sinking fund — a dedicated budget line where you save a fixed amount each month toward a known irregular cost. If car registration and two oil changes cost you roughly $600 a year, add $50 per month to a car-maintenance category and leave it alone until you need it. Do the same for school fees, sports seasons, and gift-giving periods. List every irregular expense you spent money on last year, divide each by 12, and add those monthly amounts into your category budget. It feels like you have less to spend each month, but you stop being blindsided by expenses that were never actually unexpected.
